This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami-Dade Mayor.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as pardoning holiday birds, but the county's top official experienced a presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued since the onset of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a prosperous future without fear.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, provided by a first responder, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so widespread that a leading lexicon site recently declared “6-7” its 2025 word of the year.
A Future Secured
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to open the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: vibrant, varied, and based in heritage that bring people together. Each year, we are delighted to mark heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and strong coffee as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
