The Two Fatalities Revealed in the Providence Campus Shooting as Authorities Persist in Hunt for Gunman.

Both young individuals who lost their lives in Saturday’s violent attack at Brown University had tributes paid to them on Monday – while an intensive search for their killer continued following the release by local law enforcement of the only individual questioned in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was called “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, per the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.

Her role included second-in-command of Brown’s division of the campus GOP group, according to the organization. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also expressed condolences publicly, saying in part: “It's indescribable. Remembering her family and friends, especially her parents.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The other person killed was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his initial year at the prestigious university, family members said.

Umurzokov’s identity was confirmed by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. His ambitions were lofty of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and aiding others,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a memorial statement.

What Happened

An additional nine individuals were injured in the violent event in the engineering department of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the university's examination week.

Authorities said by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-man arrested in a raid at a hotel about 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“There is a killer at large,” said the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you need to change course and head another way, and this is precisely what occurred over the last approximately one day.”

The shooter opened fire inside a room in the engineering building on Saturday afternoon, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm handgun, a law enforcement official reported to the Associated Press.
