The Showrunner Shares He Has a Plan for How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... At the Moment.

The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would become a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

Now that Season 1 of the hit series wrapping up—and the next chapter already in development—the writers' room reflected on the fan response and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.

About the Tremendous Viewer Reception

One could easily to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and online debates surrounding Pluribus. He is striving to ignore the noise.

“It's like being an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I hear about it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

Regardless of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.”

“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.

The Big Question: Does Vince Gilligan Know the Ending of Pluribus?

Given that Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of.

“We've developed some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to discard a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Alternatively, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.

“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”

Of course, why mess with the classics?

“I'd love for Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
