New York Introduces Online Platform for Citizens to Share Immigration Footage Following Detentions of 4 US Citizens
New York state attorney general has rolled out a recent digital platform asking citizens to share images and footage of federal immigration enforcement around New York. This step comes just a day after a high-profile immigration operation shook Chinatown in Manhattan, prompting mass outcry.
American Citizens Detained During ICE Operation
A US congressman announced during a midweek briefing that four citizens were arrested and held for "nearly 24 hours" after the enforcement action. Protests erupted in NYC on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Each citizen has the right to reside free from terror," the AG stated in a statement.
"Anyone who observed and recorded federal operations recently, I ask you to share that evidence with us. We are pledged to reviewing these reports and investigating any violations of law."
Form Details
The portal offers spaces to upload photos and videos of the operation, along with a section to specify geographic details. Prior to sending, submitters must check a option that states that "the office may use any documents, photographs, or videos in a legal proceeding, including in a lawsuit or public report."
Details of the ICE Action
The Manhattan operation, which witnesses say involved more than 50 government officers, took place in a popular area of the city where counterfeit products and other goods are sold daily in large quantities – often to sightseers.
Videos of the incident reveal several hooded and equipped federal agents zip-tying and detaining a person, and pushing back onlookers. Throngs of New Yorkers followed the personnel through the streets. An armored military vehicle was observed rolling through the Manhattan avenues.
Leadership Statements
During a news conference organized with the New York immigrant rights coalition, congressman Dan Goldman, a Democrat, said that four American citizens were arrested by immigration for about 24 hours and that there were "no situations where US citizens should be taken for without cause." He said the individuals were let go on Wednesday with no charges filed.
"There's a clear purpose here. It is not to take criminals off the street," the congressman remarked. "This constitutes a armed campaign to provoke unrest. It is simply a justification to generate turmoil for the government to deploy the troops to halt conflict that they initiated."
Broad Criticism
Outrage over the ICE raid escalated – every political contenders criticized the raid, including Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Repeatedly, the current administration opts for heavy-handed tactics that generate terror, rather than security. It needs to cease," one mayoral candidate wrote.
The city's community groups expressed outrage as well.
"ICE raided the neighborhood with armored transports, masked agents and protective equipment to target local sellers working to survive. This action had no connection to community security and was entirely about terrorizing immigrant families and areas," remarked the head of a major immigrant coalition.
Official Guidelines
Agency rules prohibits the holding of citizens and the bureau has claimed it does not apprehend US citizens. Yet, external research has revealed that numerous American nationals have been taken illegally by ICE during the period of the present government.
Recent Pattern
Enforcement actions have been cropping up increasingly in New York and around the country this year.
An October operation in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Rallies targeting ICE are widespread as are allegations of violence and cruel conditions.
Latest, a document submitted by legal entities claimed medical neglect of pregnant women in government custody.
