Israeli citizens commemorate two-year remembrance of 7 October attacks as Palestinian ceasefire talks proceed
Israelis have assembled across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-led assault on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a resolution to the conflict in Gaza.
The assault led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel answered by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our violent opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.
He also vowed to "achieve all the aims of the war: the return of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will never again present a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed official memorials until 16 October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was aired across Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was respected throughout the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas delegations met in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the terms of the proposal.
A senior representative familiar with the discussions said that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at 7 PM local time.
The source said the morning session ended without significant progress, because of differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not recommence combat after the first phase of the arrangement.
He added that the talks are "difficult and have not yet produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are working hard to close the gaps between the both parties.
Key Matters in Negotiations
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The trade of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies distribution
- After-conflict management of the area
Citizen Feeling
In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, young Hagar - whose sibling survived the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were murdered and dozens more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No place seems like home anymore and until all the hostages come back none of us will feel safe."
"When we see everybody home again, we can relax anew. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their support for the relatives of the hostages. Israel says 48 continue in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be living.
Activist one woman remarked: "It's necessary do every compromise required for the hostages to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be secure."
Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that about seventy percent of Israeli citizens prefer the conflict to finish in return for the freedom of the captives.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the site of the gathering, mourners assembled to honor the dead.
From that location, the noise of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers indicated the intense Israeli attacks carried on.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were documented in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, sector and zone districts and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"As the dusk falls, the fear appears with it," displaced Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.
"We are fearful of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who rests his face on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we check the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the fighting will resume to us."
Medical Emergency
The healthcare center in the urban area said it had received the remains of six people by the midday, including three who died in an Israeli bombing in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of the city reported additional dead people had been delivered. A person was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the southern area, health workers said.
