Realistically, they'd hope for an Ashes series in Australia where they remain in contention to reclaim the urn following the initial matches.
That will not be happening this time, though, after Australia's crushing triumph in Adelaide gave Australia leading three-nil for the fourth consecutive series on their own soil.
The loyal traveling fans, England's supporters' group, have thousands of supporters traveling for the last two matches in the SCG and MCG.
In addition, there are travel parties who will celebrate the holidays in Australia, as well as loved ones heading for a dream holiday.
The Disappointed Travelers
The Ryding siblings are among those affected.
The group had their travel arrangements and match passes arranged for the Boxing Day and New Year Tests "well ahead of time", dreaming of a long-awaited triumph.
Sadly, they've observed Australia outplay the visitors in just 11 days from their residence in the north of England.
"All my colleagues has been making comments that the series is done for the last two weeks," said Sam.
"Our expectation had been that we would have something to play for by the time we arrived."
Lowered Expectations
Optimism was high regarding the team's prospects of securing a first win in 15 years for a triumph on Australian soil ahead of the tour.
Yet now they are staring down the barrel of extending their winless run in the country to 19 consecutive Tests when the fourth Test gets under way in the MCG on Christmas Day.
Ben Stokes' side - and their followers - will be desperate to avoid a whitewash.
It was mentioned that the "entertainment" of head coach Brendon McCullum's 'Bazball' in the past couple of seasons had "reinvigorated" the five-day game for England fans.
Yet the fans said they had low expectations for the fourth and fifth Tests - and all they are requesting from the players is "a show of spirit".
"Every pundit alludes to it, but it all comes down to fortitude. 'This style has been elevated to a term now that is just, like, impractical batting," added Rory.
"Over the course of five days, you should apply yourself. Playing at deliveries 'sixth stump' areas has not been part of the fundamentals, and that is largely because of the batting lineup."
The Remaining Matches
Prompted about he believed England will win a match in this Ashes series, came the reply: "The evidence suggests the hosts are a stronger side currently."
"It will require multiple performers that makes a significant contribution and makes a big impact."
Regardless of the result, the fans are anticipating the trip.
"It will be a wonderful trip regardless," added another sibling. "We must adopt that attitude."
"Of course, it's a let-down we aren't fighting for more, but we have made a substantial financial commitment as it is."
"We will make the most of celebrating the holidays out there. Additionally, it's our first experience abroad at this time of year."
A teacher, Katie is focused on enjoying the lengthy journey as part of her time off.
"Should the cricket disappoint, there's always golf to turn to," she added.
