No major competition promotes equal footing as effectively as the NFL: it defines their identity. Yet following 10 weeks in this campaign, this doesn't represent a landscape with perfect equilibrium separating contenders, pretenders, and middle-of-the-pack clubs. Instead, it's a scenario where most of the league is simply sufficient.
NFC Standings Definition
Looking at the NFC side, to some degree, we see clearer definition. The Rams and Seahawks (each holding 7-2 records) appear to be the most balanced franchises in football, and delivered blowout wins during Sunday's action. Philadelphia at 6-2 despite their struggles still have among the most gifted lineups in the league, similar to Green Bay (5-2-1 record). The Lions also (6-3 standing), who have been inconsistent along both lines of scrimmage while managing internal staff conflicts, have demonstrated they're capable of dominating strong franchises. For each of these squads, one can readily construct a route to the final game.
AFC Confusion
In the AFC however, the playoff picture is a jumbled mess. The current division frontrunners at this stage: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (all at 8-2) and the Steelers (5-4). Take another look. No Chiefs presence. Buffalo is missing. Not the Ravens or Bengals. The usual contenders, featuring premier quarterback talent, display either glaring roster weaknesses or have suffered medical setbacks.

To some extent, it’s the league’s ideal. But watching the current division frontrunners within the conference remains somewhat odd. Drake Maye has been brought down on 35 occasions – ranking second league-wide – with several hits he endured during the game were vicious. As the season progresses, those hits add up.
Broncos Situation
The Broncos hold eight wins similarly, and it still feels as if they’re holding their breath. Their quarterback has performed unevenly, with the attack struggling, with the defense doing all the heavy lifting. Without serviceable quarterback play, the Broncos aren’t scaring anyone in the postseason. The Chargers are also hovering in the AFC West with seven wins, yet medical problems along their offensive line will present challenges to mount a deep postseason tilt.
Pittsburgh Situation
Meanwhile, Pittsburgh exists, somehow still leading the AFC North despite being thumped 25-10 by the Chargers in the evening game. They have a negative point differential, their defense regularly vanishes, with their quarterback's restrictions given his veteran status regularly manifest. They’re 5–4 and holding on, yet Baltimore, featuring a recovered Jackson with manageable games ahead, are riding a three-game streak. It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that the Ravens have narrowed to within one game of Pittsburgh, though the speed of this shift represents criticism toward Pittsburgh's fluctuating form. That the Ravens started losing five of six yet still appear capable of division victory is telling about the entire AFC.
Historical Favorites
The Ravens' form part of the Big Three – together with Bills and Chiefs – powered by their MVP quarterbacks, who could still create the most fear among competitors if they qualified. They're the teams everyone hopes to avoid, yet Kansas City and Buffalo cannot get out of their own way.
Bills Struggles
Last week, the Bills felt confident following victory over Kansas City. On Sunday they suffered a particularly discouraging setback during the campaign.
