British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect behind some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments made him a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
